The NGFS, established in 2017, has served as a hub for central banks and regulators to collaborate on understanding and managing the financial risks posed by climate change. Despite the Fed's exit, the organization, which now counts the European Central Bank (ECB) as its most prominent member, remains committed to its mission. Under the presidency of Christine Lagarde, the ECB has integrated climate considerations into its monetary and supervisory policies.

ECB's Green Initiatives

The ECB's attempts to address climate change have faced criticism from multiple quarters, including some European politicians and central bankers. With the Fed's recent decision, critics of the ECB's proactive stance may gain further traction. Nevertheless, advocates like Stanislas Jourdan of the Sustainable Finance Lab urge political forces in Europe to bolster support for the ECB's climate objectives, potentially leading to initiatives like a green interest rate that favors environmentally sustainable lending practices.

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite its efforts, the ECB's measures have yet to significantly impact borrowing costs for polluting firms.
