U.S. Fluorspar Import Skyrockets to 40K Tons in November 2022

U.S. Fluorspar Imports

In November 2022, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of fluorspar, when their volume increased by 615% to 40K tons. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 72K tons in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to November 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fluorspar imports soared to $16M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. Overall, imports saw a tangible increase. Imports peaked at 25K tons in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to November 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (23K tons) and Mexico (17K tons) were the main suppliers of fluorspar imports to the United States.

From January 2022 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +55.7%).

In value terms, China ($9.9M) and Mexico ($6.2M) appeared to be the largest fluorspar suppliers to the United States.

China, with a CAGR of +54.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2022, the fluorspar price amounted to $405 per ton (CIF, US), surging by 2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 126% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $528 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to November 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was China ($439 per ton), while the price for Mexico amounted to $359 per ton.

From January 2022 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Fluorspar Market Overview

The vast majority of fluorspar produced in the United States is used in the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is itself used in a number of important industrial processes. These include the manufacture of aluminum fluoride (used in aluminum production), fluoropolymers (used in a variety of applications including non-stick coatings and Teflon), and refrigerants.

Other significant uses for fluorspar include glassmaking, steelmaking, and ceramic production. Fluorspar is added to glass to reduce its melting point and improve its clarity, while in steelmaking it is used as a flux to remove impurities. In ceramics, it is used as a source of fluorine for glazes and other materials.

The United States is the world's largest producer and consumer of fluorspar, with production and consumption both increasing in recent years. The main factor driving this growth is the continued expansion of the U.S. economy, which has led to increased demand for fluorine-containing chemicals used in a wide range of industries. In addition, high prices for alternatives to fluorspar have also contributed to higher demand for the mineral.
