U.S. Frozen Crustaceans Imports
For the third month in a row, the United States recorded growth in overseas purchases of frozen crustaceans, which increased by 16% to 63K tons in May 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight contraction.
In value terms, frozen crustaceans imports surged to $601M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump.

Imports by Country
India (19K tons), Ecuador (16K tons) and Canada (12K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen crustaceans imports to the United States, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Indonesia, Vietnam, Argentina and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the biggest increases were in Mexico (with a CAGR of +0.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest frozen crustaceans suppliers to the United States were Canada ($176M), India ($148M) and Ecuador ($108M), with a combined 72% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Vietnam, Argentina and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 21%.
Mexico, with a CAGR of -0.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
In May 2023, the frozen crustaceans price stood at $9,611 per ton (CIF, US), increasing by 6.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The import price peaked at $17,190 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($14,983 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($6,776 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
