The United States and Denmark have actively engaged with Greenland's largest rare earth deposit developer to deter Chinese-linked firms from acquiring a significant project, as reported by Reuters. Tanbreez Mining CEO Greg Barnes revealed extensive discussions with Washington as it considers funding options to cultivate the island's critical minerals sector.

This geopolitical dynamic highlights the sustained economic interest the U.S. has in Greenland, predating President-elect Donald Trump's musings about acquiring the territory. Essential for high-tech and defense industries, rare earths are vectors of economic rivalry between Chinese and Western entities to lessen China's dominant role in their extraction and processing.

Tony Sage, CEO of New York-based Critical Metals, confirmed that U.S. officials visited the southern Greenland project twice, emphasizing not to sell to Chinese entities. Barnes agreed to a $5 million cash and $211 million stock deal with Critical Metals, significantly lower than Chinese offers, reflecting strategic U.S. influence.

U.S. efforts to secure rare earth projects that once seemed unattractive are reshaping investment landscapes, analysts note. Even though Tanbreez's deposit holds 30% heavy rare earths, crucial for defense systems, reaching commercial production may face hurdles, noted David Merriman from Project Blue consultancy.
