U.S. Investors Embrace Equity Funds as Federal Reserve Rate Cut Looms

U.S. investors remained bullish on equity funds, purchasing them for the sixth straight week through December 11, driven by expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate cut. According to Reuters, this stems from signs of a cooling labor market and declining inflation. Investors snapped up a net $6.36 billion in U.S. equity funds during the week, following a substantial $8.82 billion in net additions the week before, LSEG Lipper data shows.

The futures market is forecasting a 96.7% probability that the Federal Reserve will lower rates by a quarter-point at its December 17-18 meeting, aiming to bolster a labor market grappling with a 4.2% unemployment rate as reported in November. U.S. large-cap and small-cap equity funds were notably sought after, with inflows of $2.33 billion and $2.12 billion, respectively. Additionally, multi-cap funds received $958 million in net purchases, whereas mid-cap funds faced outflows totaling $144 million.

Sectoral fund sell-offs persisted, with investors withdrawing $1.22 billion, marking the largest weekly outflow since September 25. The healthcare, consumer discretionary, and financial sectors experienced the most significant liquidations, amounting to $898 million, $584 million, and $299 million, respectively.

Bonds and Money Markets Show Diverging Trends

Meanwhile, U.S. bond funds reported net purchases of $4.15 billion for the week, continuing a 28-week streak of inflows. Short-to-intermediate investment-grade funds attracted $2.95 billion, the highest in three weeks. Concurrently, general domestic taxable fixed income and loan participation funds reported robust inflows of $1.96 billion and $1.06 billion, respectively.

Conversely, money market funds experienced minor net outflows of $2.67 billion, a stark contrast to the sharp $121.33 billion influx recorded the previous week. With ongoing market developments, investors continue to recalibrate their strategies, seeking opportunities amid the anticipated interest rate adjustments.
