U.S. Iodine Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the iodine price amounted to $60,606 per ton (CIF, US), rising by 3.9% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a resilient increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, iodine import price increased by +6.8% against December 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 18% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $62,646 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($63,058 per ton), while the price for Chile stood at $60,779 per ton.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+5.9%).

U.S. Iodine Imports
For the third consecutive month, the United States recorded growth in supplies from abroad of iodine, which increased by 12% to 426 tons in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 430% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 645 tons. From May 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iodine imports skyrocketed to $26M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, imports showed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 456% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in February 2023.
U.S. Iodine Imports by Country
In February 2023, Chile (387 tons) was the main iodine supplier to the United States, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, iodine imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (35 tons), more than tenfold.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Chile was relatively modest.
In value terms, Chile ($24M) constituted the largest supplier of iodine to the United States, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($2.2M), with an 8.6% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Chile stood at +4.7%.
