U.S. Iron Angle Imports
In July 2023, approximately 72K tons of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) were imported into the United States; growing by 12% compared with the previous month's figure. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, imports increased by +49.5% against May 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when imports increased by 92% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 98K tons. From November 2022 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron angle imports expanded rapidly to $75M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when imports increased by 86% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $121M. From November 2022 to July 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Mexico (16K tons), Canada (13K tons) and the UK (11K tons) were the main suppliers of iron angle imports to the United States, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg, Spain and Germany, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +43.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($17M), Mexico ($13M) and the UK ($11M) constituted the largest iron angle suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 54% of total imports. Luxembourg, the United Arab Emirates, Germany and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +36.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
H-sections of of non-alloy steel (22K tons), i-sections of non-alloy steel (16K tons) and u-sections of non-alloy steel (7.8K tons) were the main products of iron angle imports to the United States, together comprising 63% of total imports. Iron or non-alloy steel; angles, shapes and sections, n.e.s. in heading no. 7216, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, iron or non-alloy steel; l or t sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of 80mm or more, iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm and iron or non-alloy steel; u, i or h sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in non-alloy steel i-sections (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the most traded types of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) in the United States were h-sections of of non-alloy steel ($21M), i-sections of non-alloy steel ($16M) and iron or non-alloy steel; angles, shapes and sections, n.e.s. in heading no. 7216, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded ($12M), together comprising 65% of total imports. These products were followed by u-sections of non-alloy steel, iron or non-alloy steel; l or t sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of 80mm or more, iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm and iron or non-alloy steel; u, i or h sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the iron angle price amounted to $1,036 per ton (CIF, US), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 an increase of 1.9% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,271 per ton. From October 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,548 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($774 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
