U.S. Iron Foundry Imports
In February 2023, supplies from abroad of iron foundries decreased by -9.6% to 37K tons, falling for the fourth month in a row after four months of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 19% against the previous month.
In value terms, iron foundry imports shrank to $107M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 22% month-to-month.

Imports by Country
India (15K tons), China (11K tons) and Mexico (1.9K tons) were the main suppliers of iron foundry imports to the United States, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, China ($28M), India ($25M) and France ($8.4M) constituted the largest iron foundry suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 58% of total imports. Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Germany and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +3.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the iron foundry price stood at $2,938 per ton (CIF, US), flattening at the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 5% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,021 per ton. From January 2023 to February 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($11,149 per ton), while the price for India ($1,647 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
