U.S. Labor Costs Show Moderate Rise, Offering Fed Some Inflation Relief

WASHINGTON — In the fourth quarter of 2024, U.S. labor costs increased marginally, providing a slight comfort to Federal Reserve officials who faced stalled progress on lowering inflation. According to a report by Reuters, the employment cost index (ECI), which is considered a comprehensive measure of labor costs, observed a 0.9% rise last quarter, following a 0.8% rise in the third quarter as per data from the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Despite economists' forecasts aligning with the realized growth of the ECI at 0.9%, annual labor cost growth slowed to 3.8% through December, down from 3.9% in September. This sluggish momentum in labor costs is seen as a possible indicator of changes in labor market slack and an early predictor of core inflation. Private sector wages mirrored this growth pattern with a 0.9% quarterly rise, culminating in a 3.7% annual increase. State and local government wages retained a steady 1.0% increase quarterly, leading to a 4.5% rise over the year. Additionally, benefits for all workers matched the third-quarter growth at 0.8%, with a slight annual decline to 3.6% from 3.7% previously.

Concurrently, U.S. central banking authorities have paused further rate cuts, maintaining their benchmark overnight interest rate within the 4.25%-4.50% range. This decision comes amidst considerations of the economic impact of policy changes proposed by President Donald Trump, which include tax cuts and tariffs perceived by some economists as potentially inflationary.

As inflation experienced an uptick in the fourth quarter driven by consumer spending, the Fed's strategy now reflects a revised forecast with only two rate cuts anticipated for the current year, as opposed to the four predicted in September. The policy stance underscores a cautious approach amidst ongoing economic uncertainties.
