U.S. Leather And Hide Exports
In May 2023, overseas shipments of leather and hide decreased by -12.6% to 11M units for the first time since February 2023, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 with an increase of 26% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 14M units. From August 2022 to May 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leather and hide exports rose slightly to $62M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 28% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 75M units in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country
Mexico (4.2M units) was the main destination for leather and hide exports from the United States, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, leather and hide exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (1.7M units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Canada (861K units), with a 7.7% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico amounted to -3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Austria (+28.8% per month) and Canada (-1.6% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($16M), Vietnam ($13M) and China ($8.4M) constituted the largest markets for leather and hide exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports. Italy, Austria, Canada, Hong Kong, Hungary, the UK, the Dominican Republic, Portugal, Costa Rica and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Austria, with a CAGR of +28.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In May 2023, the leather and hide price amounted to $5.5 per unit (FOB, US), picking up by 20% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 26% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $6.2 per unit in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($19.7 per unit), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($2.4 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
