U.S. Lithium Carbonate Imports
In 2024, overseas purchases of lithium carbonates decreased by -3.9% to 17K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports increased by +41.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 34%. Imports peaked at 17K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lithium carbonate imports contracted remarkably to $224M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $293M in 2023, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country
Chile (9.7K tons), Argentina (6.6K tons) and China (28 tons) were the main suppliers of lithium carbonate imports to the United States, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Chile ($143M), Argentina ($77M) and China ($651K) constituted the largest lithium carbonate suppliers to the United States, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
Chile, with a CAGR of +18.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2024, the lithium carbonate price stood at $13,541 per ton (CIF, US), dropping by -20.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when the average import price increased by 68%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $17,059 per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($23,403 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($11,720 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+22.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
