Maize Oil Export in United States Falls Dramatically to $29M in April 2023

U.S. Maize Oil Exports

After two months of growth, overseas shipments of maize oil decreased by -5.2% to 18K tons in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 462% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 21K tons. From September 2022 to April 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize oil exports shrank rapidly to $29M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when exports increased by 782% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $57M. From September 2022 to April 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (7K tons), Singapore (6K tons) and Germany (2.9K tons) were the main destinations of maize oil exports from the United States, with a combined 87% share of total exports. Qatar, Mexico and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in Qatar (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for maize oil exported from the United States were Singapore ($9.9M), Saudi Arabia ($9.7M) and Germany ($4.9M), together accounting for 84% of total exports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +7.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Crude maize (corn) oil (17K tons) was the largest type of maize oil exported from the United States, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, crude maize (corn) oil exceeded the volume of the second product type, refined maize (corn) oil (1.5K tons), more than tenfold.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of crude maize (corn) oil stood at +5.2%.

In value terms, crude maize (corn) oil ($26M) remains the largest type of maize oil exported from the United States, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by refined maize (corn) oil ($3.6M), with a 12% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of crude maize (corn) oil amounted to +6.2%.

Export Prices by Country

In April 2023, the maize oil price amounted to $1,611 per ton (FOB, US), which is down by -17.1% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 57% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,699 per ton. From September 2022 to April 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($2,701 per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($1,391 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
