Price of Margarine and Shortening in United States Drops 3%, Averaging $2,250 per Ton

U.S. Margarine And Shortening Export Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the margarine and shortening price stood at $2,250 per ton (FOB, US), falling by -3.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 17% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,703 per ton. From January 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,977 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($1,382 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Margarine And Shortening Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was non-liquid margarine ($2,610 per ton), while the average price for exports of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats amounted to $2,205 per ton.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: non-liquid margarine (+0.2%).

U.S. Margarine And Shortening Exports

In June 2023, the amount of margarine and shortening exported from the United States reduced to 14K tons, which is down by -15% compared with the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 22% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 19K tons. From April 2023 to June 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, margarine and shortening exports dropped sharply to $31M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 with an increase of 13% m-o-m.

U.S. Margarine And Shortening Exports by Type

Liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats (12K tons) was the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from the United States, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats exceeded the volume of the second product type, non-liquid margarine (1.5K tons), eightfold.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats totaled -1.3%.

In value terms, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($27M) remains the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from the United States, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by non-liquid margarine ($3.9M), with a 13% share of total exports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats amounted to -2.8%.

U.S. Margarine And Shortening Exports by Country

Canada (7.2K tons) was the main destination for margarine and shortening exports from the United States, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, margarine and shortening exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (2.8K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Jamaica (415 tons), with a 3% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada amounted to -2.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+1.2% per month) and Jamaica (+5.0% per month).

In value terms, Canada ($10M), Mexico ($5.6M) and Guatemala ($612K) appeared to be the largest markets for margarine and shortening exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 52% of total exports. Bahamas and Jamaica lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.3%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Jamaica, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
