U.S. MDF Imports Plummet to $973 Million in 2023

U.S. MDF Imports

In 2023, overseas purchases of MDF decreased by -24.4% to 1.4M cubic meters for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 1.8M cubic meters in 2022, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, MDF imports reduced sharply to $973M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 49%. Imports by Country

Canada (474K cubic meters), Chile (294K cubic meters) and China (164K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of MDF imports to the United States, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Brazil, New Zealand, Germany, Argentina and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +45.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest MDF suppliers to the United States were Canada ($338M), Chile ($223M) and China ($112M), together accounting for 69% of total imports. Brazil, Germany, New Zealand, Argentina and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +45.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In 2023, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (970K cubic meters) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to the United States, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (215K cubic meters), fivefold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm imports amounted to +3.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-1.8% per year) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($661M) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to the United States, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($164M), with a 17% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the mdf price stood at $714 per cubic meter (CIF, US), falling by -18.8% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, MDF import price increased by +26.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 34%. The import price peaked at $880 per cubic meter in 2022, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($1.4 thousand per cubic meter), while the price for Turkey ($333 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
