Motor Vehicle Engine Price in United States Increases Slightly to $2,657 per Unit

U.S. Motor Vehicle Engine Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the motor vehicle engine price amounted to $2,657 per unit (CIF, US), remaining stable against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 11% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2.8M per thousand units. From March 2023 to April 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($5,799 per unit), while the price for China ($716 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Engine Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was engines ($2,904 per unit), while the price for engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50cc ($390 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 1000cc (+0.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Engine Imports

In April 2023, the amount of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) imported into the United States declined to 329K units, which is down by -8.5% compared with the previous month. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 25% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 359K units, and then dropped in the following month.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports reduced to $874M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when imports increased by 21% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 944M units in March 2023, and then reduced in the following month.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Engine Imports by Type

In April 2023, engines (287K units) constituted the largest type of motor vehicle engine supplied to the United States, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, engines exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (32K units), ninefold. Engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc (9.1K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.8% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of engines was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc (-3.0% per month) and engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc (+1.3% per month).

In value terms, engines ($834M) constituted the largest type of motor vehicle engine supplied to the United States, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 250cc but not exceeding 1000cc ($35M), with a 4% share of total imports. It was followed by engines; reciprocating piston engines, of a kind used for the propulsion of vehicles of chapter 87, of a cylinder capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 250cc, with a 0.5% share.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Engine Imports by Country

Mexico (124K units), Canada (77K units) and South Korea (30K units) were the main suppliers of motor vehicle engine imports to the United States, with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Japan, Austria, China, Italy and the UK, which together accounted for a further 25%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($292M), Canada ($234M) and Germany ($136M) constituted the largest motor vehicle engine suppliers to the United States, together comprising 76% of total imports. South Korea, Austria, Japan, Italy, the UK and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

China, with a CAGR of +6.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
