U.S. New-Car Sales Surge in 2024, Driven by Inventory Replenishment and Incentives

U.S. new-car sales in 2024 have shown a significant recovery from their pandemic lows, fueled by improved inventories and enticing incentives. Analysts predict sales will surpass the impressive threshold of 15.8 million vehicles, marking the highest level since 2019, as reported by Reuters. General Motors (GM) is expected to retain its 2023 sales crown, with sales estimated to reach near 2.7 million vehicles.

According to Cox Automotive senior economist Charlie Chesbrough, "It's been a volatile year for the new-vehicle market, but it is expected to finish on a high note." This optimism is echoed by GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson, who highlighted a "remarkably resilient consumer" driving these sales figures.

However, not all automakers shared in this success. Stellantis and Tesla didn't see year-over-year sales gains. Stellantis faced a challenging year with declining sales for its Ram, Jeep, and Dodge brands, compounded by the repercussions of a prior aggressive pricing strategy. Over at Tesla, an expanding lineup faced growing competition, particularly in the crucial Chinese market.

Looking at the electric vehicle (EV) arena, U.S. EV sales are predicted to hit approximately 1.3 million units, translating to about 8% of all new vehicles purchased in 2024. This is a slight increase from the previous year's 1.2 million units, which made up 7.6% of total sales, according to Cox reports. The looming possibility of changes to EV tax credits under Republican President-elect Donald Trump's administration has spurred buyers into action in the year's final quarter.

As the U.S. auto industry strides into 2025, analysts like Thomas King, president of the data and analytics division at J.D. Power, project continued sales growth thanks to improved inventory levels and the wider availability of affordable vehicles. With new-vehicle sales projected to increase by about 3% in 2025, the momentum seems set to continue.
