U.S. New Home Sales Exceed Forecasts in December 2024

In December 2024, the sales of new U.S. single-family homes exceeded forecasts, providing further signs of recovery in the housing market at the year's end. According to a report by Reuters, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau revealed that new home sales rose by 3.6%, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 698,000 units. Notably, November's sales pace was also revised upwards to 674,000 units from an initial count of 664,000 units.

This increase surpassed the expectations of economists polled by Reuters, who predicted an increase to a rate of 675,000 units. December's figures reflect a 6.7% year-on-year rise, showcasing a steady demand despite the constraints of rising mortgage rates. Throughout 2024, a total of approximately 683,000 new homes were sold, indicating a 2.5% increase compared to the previous year, as per data from IndexBox.

The growth in new home sales, which make up roughly 15% of total U.S. home sales, is seen as a positive indicator, though fluctuations are common due to the volatile nature of contract signings. As the housing market enters 2025, the impact of rising borrowing costs remains a concern, but the lingering momentum from late 2024 suggests a resilient housing sector.
