U.S. Offers Record $15 Billion Loan to PG&E for Climate Resilience

The United States is set to provide a record $15 billion low-interest loan to California-based utility PG&E, aiming to bolster climate resilience initiatives and upgrade the electrical grid. The Wall Street Journal reported this groundbreaking move, citing sources familiar with the matter.

PG&E Corp, the parent of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, stands as one of the country's largest utility providers, servicing approximately 16 million individuals across northern and central California. The loan, administered by the U.S. Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, will be allocated in cash installments over the coming years. These funds will facilitate significant projects including the refurbishment of PG&E's hydroelectric infrastructure and power lines.

This financial backing comes in conjunction with PG&E's strategy to amass $2.4 billion through a stock offering, announced earlier this month. The move underscores a broader trend among U.S. utility firms, which are amplifying investments into infrastructure upgrades to weather extraordinary conditions like hurricanes and wildfires, alongside accommodating the increased demand from industrial clients such as data centers.
