Outboard Boat Motors Import in United States Rises Markedly to $128M in March 2023

U.S. Outboard Boat Motors Imports

Outboard boat motors imports into the United States reduced modestly to 22K units in March 2023, remaining stable against the previous month. In general, imports saw a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 32K units. From August 2022 to March 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, outboard boat motors imports rose sharply to $128M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 with an increase of 43% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 161M units in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to March 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In March 2023, Japan (21K units) was the main supplier of outboard boat motors to the United States, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, outboard boat motors imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (1.3K units), more than tenfold.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Japan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Thailand (-1.7% per month) and China (-30.0% per month).

In value terms, Japan ($125M) constituted the largest supplier of outboard boat motors to the United States, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($2.4M), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Japan was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Thailand (-0.0% per month) and China (-30.1% per month).

Import Prices by Country

In March 2023, the outboard boat motors price amounted to $5,750 per unit (CIF, US), surging by 8.7% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2022 to March 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 an increase of 53% against the previous month. The import price peaked in March 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($6,003 per unit), while the price for Thailand ($1,846 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
