Import of Passenger Cars in the United States Declines Slightly to $164 Billion for 2023

U.S. Passenger Car Imports

Passenger car imports into the United States dropped to 5.8M units in 2023, with a decrease of -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 10%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 8M units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports fell slightly to $164B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Mexico (1.4M units), Japan (1.3M units) and Canada (1.1M units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to the United States, together accounting for 65% of total imports. South Korea, Germany, Slovakia, the UK and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +16.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest passenger car suppliers to the United States were Japan ($35B), Canada ($30.7B) and Mexico ($29.6B), together comprising 58% of total imports. South Korea, Germany, Slovakia, the UK and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +21.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the passenger car price stood at $28,326 per unit (CIF, US), with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.3%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($87,744 per unit), while the price for China ($5,639 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
