U.S. Photographic Film Exports
In November 2022, overseas shipments of photographic film, paper, plate, and chemical increased by 2.5% to 5.2K tons, rising for the second month in a row after three months of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when exports increased by 35% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 7K tons. From July 2022 to November 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, photographic film exports declined sharply to $114M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 with an increase of 8.8% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 148K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to November 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (1.3K tons) was the main destination for photographic film exports from the United States, accounting for a 24% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic film exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (627 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (513 tons), with a 9.9% share.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China amounted to +2.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+1.1% per month) and the Netherlands (+2.4% per month).
In value terms, China ($41M) remains the key foreign market for photographic film exports from the United States, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($11M), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 4.1% share.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+0.9% per month) and Canada (-0.8% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In November 2022, the photographic film price amounted to $22.1 per kg (FOB, US), falling by -17.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 21% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $28.5 per kg in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to November 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($32.8 per kg), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($3.4 per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
