U.S. Primary Battery Import Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the primary battery price stood at $297 per thousand units (CIF, US), rising by 21% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in January 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($482 per thousand units), while the price for Vietnam ($142 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Primary Battery Imports

In January 2023, approximately 374M units of primary batteries were imported into the United States; increasing by 9.4% against the month before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 67% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 495M units in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to January 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary battery imports soared to $111M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 51% month-to-month. Imports peaked in January 2023.

U.S. Primary Battery Imports by Country

In January 2023, China (199M units) constituted the largest primary battery supplier to the United States, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, primary battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (67M units), threefold. Indonesia (42M units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Singapore (-2.5% per month) and Indonesia (-6.1% per month).

In value terms, the largest primary battery suppliers to the United States were China ($32M), Singapore ($31M) and Japan ($8.7M), together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 12%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Primary Battery Prices Skyrocket Due to Rising Raw Material Costs and Increased Demand for Clean Energy Storage

The unprecedented price increase in prices can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the rising costs of producing primary batteries, the limited availability of raw materials, and the increased demand for these batteries.

The key factor behind the soaring prices of primary batteries is the increasing cost of raw materials. Many of the materials used to manufacture these batteries, such as lead and zinc, have experienced significant price increases in recent months due to supply chain disruptions.

The price of primary batteries is also affected by changes in the global energy market. As the world shifts away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy, the demand for batteries that can store and distribute renewable energy has increased. This shift in demand has put additional pressure on primary battery manufacturers to increase their production, which is contributing to higher prices.
