US Protectionist Policies Could Affect Global Interest Rate Cuts

South African central bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago cautioned that protectionist policies by the US may impede future interest-rate reductions by central banks if they lead to inflationary pressures. In an interview with Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Kganyago highlighted the complexity of the current economic outlook, referencing his insights shared with Yahoo Finance.

Donald Trump's recent inauguration as the US president comes with a promise to impose tariffs of up to 25% on Mexico and Canada by February 1. Kganyago noted that should these measures prove inflationary, they could disrupt the disinflation process that central banks have diligently pursued since the significant inflationary events of 2022.

Globally, central banks, including those in the US, the European Union, and South Africa, began reducing rates last year as inflation pressures eased. However, any potential inflation from US policies could prompt a halt to these easing trends. The South African Reserve Bank recently lowered its benchmark interest rate for the second consecutive meeting in November by 25 basis points to 7.75%, and according to data from the IndexBox platform, the country is anticipated to keep its rate reduction cycle brief, with another possible cut forecast for the meeting on January 30.
