U.S. Retail Sales Slowdown in December 2024

U.S. retail sales experienced a slowdown in December, closing 2024 with mixed signals as reflected by recent financial data. According to Yahoo Finance, headline sales increased by 0.4% to reach a cumulative $729.2 billion, falling short of Wall Street's forecast of a 0.6% rise. The revised November statistics showed a stronger 0.8% gain.

Nonetheless, a pivotal control-group number, excluding certain volatile sales categories, surpassed expectations with a 0.7% increase. This was a significant factor in GDP calculations, exceeding forecasts and illustrating complexities in the inflation outlook for 2025.

Contrastingly, Mastercard's SpendingPulse report indicated a 3.8% growth in sales from November 1 through December 24 compared to the same period the previous year, despite having fewer shopping days than in 2023.

The reaction in stock markets was swift as U.S. stocks saw reduced gains post-data release. This solid spending report coupled with resilient job market data led to speculations of diminished prospects for interest-rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in 2025, contributing to market volatility.

Investment analysts highlighted investor anxiety amid this volatile environment, with Bret Kenwell from eToro noting concerns about inflation and interest-rate reductions despite a rally in the S&P 500. "Ultimately, we want to see a strong jobs market and retail sales. That tells us that the consumer is healthy and confident, two important observations for an economy that has roughly two-thirds of its GDP driven by consumer spending," Kenwell noted.

Market futures suggested a mixed opening with slight increases for the Nasdaq and declines for the Dow. Meanwhile, Treasury yields experienced a minor uptick, reflecting the ongoing market adjustments to economic indicators.
