U.S. Seat Import Price in June 2023
In June 2023, the seat price stood at $45.3 per unit (CIF, US), approximately mirroring the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.8% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $56.4 per unit in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($157 per unit), while the price for China ($25.6 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

U.S. Seat Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was seats; of a kind used for aircraft ($6,077 per unit), while the price for non-upholstered seats with metal frames ($16.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by seats; of a kind used for aircraft (+3.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Seat Imports
In June 2023, supplies from abroad of seats decreased by -9.6% to 23M units for the first time since March 2023, thus ending a two-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when imports increased by 20% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 30M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, seat imports reduced to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. In general, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when imports increased by 14% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 1.4B units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Seat Imports by Type
Non-upholstered seats with metal frames (8.7M units), upholstered seats with wooden frames (5.7M units) and upholstered seats with metal frames (4M units) were the main products of seat imports to the United States, together comprising 81% of total imports. Seats; n.e.s. in heading no. 9401, (excluding medical, surgical, dental, veterinary or barber furniture), non-upholstered seats with wooden frames, seats for motor vehicles, seats; of cane, osier or similar materials, other than bamboo or rattan and seats; of a kind used for aircraft lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in seats; of a kind used for aircraft (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, upholstered seats with wooden frames ($553M) constituted the largest type of seat supplied to the United States, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by non-upholstered seats with metal frames ($147M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by upholstered seats with metal frames, with a 13% share.
U.S. Seat Imports by Country
In June 2023, China (16M units) constituted the largest seat supplier to the United States, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, seat imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (2.9M units), sixfold. Mexico (642K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.8% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China amounted to -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-2.5% per month) and Mexico (-1.0% per month).
In value terms, the largest seat suppliers to the United States were China ($422M), Vietnam ($261M) and Mexico ($101M), together accounting for 76% of total imports. Canada and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.9%.
Among the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of -0.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
