US Services Sector Sees Unprecedented Growth Amid Manufacturing Slowdown

The United States service sector is witnessing unprecedented expansion, marking its fastest growth since October 2021. According to a Bloomberg report, the S&P Global flash December index for service providers soared to 58.5, up from 56.1 the previous month, underscoring the sector's robust momentum.

The economic divergence in the U.S. is becoming increasingly apparent, as services thrive while manufacturing continues to struggle. The index reveals a jump of 3.3 points to 71.1 in future output expectations, the highest since May 2022, highlighting the services sector's dynamism. Conversely, manufacturing faces challenges like accelerated input prices due to potential tariffs, impacting factory output and orders.

Despite challenges in manufacturing, the 12-month outlook confidence has reached a 2.5-year high, with expectations for the economy's robust upturn to extend into the new year. However, concerns about tariffs and inflation due to rising imported material costs have put a damper on manufacturing sector optimism, previously buoyed after the election.

Data confirms these findings by indicating an industry shift with manufacturers experiencing a significant upsurge in the index of prices paid for materials to 59.1. Meanwhile, service providers benefited from the slowest input cost growth in over four years, mitigating wage growth weaknesses.

New business growth surged for service providers, marking the strongest increase since March 2022, while the manufacturing sector continues to grapple with the fastest contraction of factory order backlogs seen since the pandemic's early months. This comprehensive data was collected between December 5th and 13th, 2023.
