U.S. Snack Food Imports
In February 2023, overseas purchases of snack food decreased by -5.6% to 16K tons, falling for the third month in a row after four months of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 17% m-o-m.
In value terms, snack food imports reduced slightly to $70M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% from February 2022 to February 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 17% against the previous month.

Imports by Country
In February 2023, Mexico (9.7K tons) constituted the largest supplier of snack food to the United States, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, snack food imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (3.4K tons), threefold. India (466 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.9% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico stood at +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Canada (+1.2% per month) and India (-0.1% per month).
In value terms, the largest snack food suppliers to the United States were Mexico ($37M), Canada ($20M) and Israel ($2.1M), with a combined 84% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Canada, with a CAGR of +2.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the snack food price amounted to $4,417 per ton (CIF, US), surging by 2.6% against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 6.3% against the previous month. The import price peaked in February 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Israel ($7,209 per ton), while the price for India ($3,046 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
