U.S. Sorghum Exports Jump 115% to $83M in Feb. 2023

U.S. Sorghum Exports

In February 2023, shipments abroad of sorghum increased by 138% to 219K tons for the first time since October 2022, thus ending a three-month declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 1.3M tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to February 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum exports soared to $83M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The exports peaked at 461K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to February 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (176K tons) was the main destination for sorghum exports from the United States, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, sorghum exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (23K tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Djibouti (10K tons), with a 4.6% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China stood at -11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-1.4% per month) and Djibouti (0.0% per month).

In value terms, China ($60M) remains the key foreign market for sorghum exports from the United States, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($11M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by South Sudan, with a 9.3% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at -11.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+2.3% per month) and South Sudan (-1.7% per month).

Export Prices by Country

In February 2023, the sorghum price stood at $380 per ton (FOB, US), with a decrease of -9.7% against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 18% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $421 per ton in January 2023, and then shrank in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,294 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($338 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
