U.S. Stationery Imports
In 2024, approx. 289K tons of articles of stationery were imported into the United States; growing by 8.2% compared with 2023 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2014 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 15%. Imports peaked at 291K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, stationery imports expanded rapidly to $944M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked at $1.1B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Vietnam (80K tons), China (74K tons) and India (42K tons) were the main suppliers of stationery imports to the United States, together accounting for 68% of total imports. Mexico, Cambodia, Taiwan (Chinese), Canada and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +145.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($256M), Vietnam ($254M) and Mexico ($140M) constituted the largest stationery suppliers to the United States, with a combined 69% share of total imports. India, Cambodia, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese) and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +122.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In 2024, registers, account books, order books and receipt books (203K tons) constituted the largest type of articles of stationery supplied to the United States, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, registers, account books, order books and receipt books exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, paper binders, folders and file covers (79K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by blotting pads and book covers (5.4K tons), with a 1.9% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the volume of registers, account books, order books and receipt books imports stood at +6.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: paper binders, folders and file covers (+0.8% per year) and blotting pads and book covers (+5.9% per year).
In value terms, registers, account books, order books and receipt books ($657M) constituted the largest type of articles of stationery supplied to the United States, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by paper binders, folders and file covers ($240M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by blotting pads and book covers, with a 2.7% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2024, the stationery price amounted to $3,263 per ton (CIF, US), declining by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the average import price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $4,887 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($15,813 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($1,660 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
