US Steel Kosice Faces Slump in Production and Sales in 2024

In a challenging 2024, Slovakian steelmaker US Steel Kosice (USSK) reported a significant reduction in steel production by 12.8% compared to the previous year, as outlined in the company's recent report. The plant produced 3.83 million tons of steel, with shipments decreasing by 8.2% year-on-year, reaching the lowest levels since 2020.

The company's financial outcomes were affected by reduced demand and lower product prices, culminating in a $54 million loss, reversing a slight profit of $4 million in 2023. The average product prices fell to $805 per ton, marking a 7.8% decline from the previous year.

Production and Sales Breakdown

Hot-rolled coils (HRC) formed the bulk of the shipments, comprising 60% of the total in 2024. Meanwhile, cold-rolled flat products accounted for 10%, coated products for 20%, with semi-finished products and tin each constituting 5%. The downturn in the global markets impacted the construction industry, automotive industry, and service centers, which collectively represented 75% of USSK's customer base.

Despite these setbacks, US Steel Kosice remains optimistic about the future. The company projects a gradual resurgence in European steel demand and hopes for stabilization in energy markets. To counteract the current challenges, USSK is set to implement cost optimization measures and enhance production efficiency, aiming to restore profitability in the coming year.
