US Stocks Decline as Investors Weigh New Economic Data and Nvidia's Ambitious AI Plans

According to Yahoo Finance, the S&P 500 fell approximately 0.7%, while the Nasdaq Composite saw a steeper decline of around 1.4%. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped by about 0.1%.

Market Reactions to Economic Indicators

The market's response comes on the heels of new insights from the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing PMI, which depicted ongoing expansion in the manufacturing sector last month. However, the prices paid index soared to a near two-year high at 64.4, rising from 58.2 previously. This hike in prices raises concerns for the Federal Reserve, as it signals persistent inflationary pressures that could continue through mid-next year. Economist Thomas Ryan from Capital Economics North America noted that these developments are a reminder of the ongoing battle against inflation.

Additionally, JOLTS data revealed an unexpected rise in job openings for November, while both hiring rates and the quits rate declined, with the latter dropping to 1.9% from October's 2.1%. These figures set the scene for the upcoming December jobs report, as recent Fed commentary suggests a cautious approach to interest rate adjustments amidst labor market resilience and inflation.

Nvidia and Chip Stocks Movement

In the corporate sector, Nvidia's shares fell approximately 5% after hitting a record high, driven by CEO Jensen Huang's CES announcement of a new AI superchip. Despite Nvidia's losses, other semiconductor companies like Micron Technology gained traction, increasing around 4%, accompanied by growth in Asian markets.

As investors await further clarity on Donald Trump's trade policies, the president-elect denied reports of his team considering more targeted tariffs. Such measures hold potential implications for global economic trajectories.
