Store closures across the United States have reached unprecedented levels, with 2024 witnessing the highest numbers since the onset of the pandemic. A report by Coresight Research underscores this trend, projecting even more closures in 2025 as consumers increasingly gravitate toward dominant industry players. Read more.

Major retailers such as Party City and Macy's led the wave of closures last year, shutting down a total of 7,325 stores. This marks a significant spike from 2020 when nearly 10,000 stores closed during the initial pandemic disruptions. As of early January 2025, announcements for 1,925 further closures were already made, with Party City, Big Lots, Walgreens Boots Alliance, 7-Eleven, and Macy's topping the list.

Bankruptcies and Competitive Pressures

A surge in bankruptcies has fueled this trend, with Coresight documenting 51 retail bankruptcies in 2024, more than doubling the total from the previous year. Notable closures are commonly categorized into complete liquidation, post-bankruptcy shut down, or strategic downsizing to align with evolving consumer preferences—exemplified by Walgreens, CVS, and Macy's.

Macy's strategy involves closing about 150 stores by early 2027 while expanding more successful brands. Competitive pressures from e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu are also reshaping the retail landscape, contributing to the struggles of brick-and-mortar establishments like Party City and The Container Store.

Sector-Specific Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the challenging environment, consumer spending remains robust, demonstrating a 4% year-over-year increase during the holiday season according to the National Retail Federation. The struggle mainly affects specialty retailers like Big Lots and The Container Store, which are succumbing to the sharper competitive edges and operational efficiencies of online platforms.

On a more positive note, store openings have also accelerated, reaching their peak since Coresight began its tracking in 2012.
