U.S. Surgical Appliance Imports
In May 2023, after two months of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of surgical appliance and supplies, when their volume decreased by -1.8% to 39K tons. In general, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when imports increased by 8.9% month-to-month.
In value terms, surgical appliance imports rose markedly to $1.7B (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 20% against the previous month.

Imports by Country
In May 2023, China (15K tons) constituted the largest supplier of surgical appliance to the United States, accounting for a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, surgical appliance imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (6.3K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (4.3K tons), with an 11% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China totaled -6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (-1.8% per month) and Malaysia (-15.6% per month).
In value terms, China ($241M), Mexico ($221M) and Singapore ($123M) were the largest surgical appliance suppliers to the United States, with a combined 35% share of total imports. Germany, Canada, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), the Dominican Republic, Vietnam and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +2.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In May 2023, the surgical appliance price amounted to $43,539 per ton (CIF, US), with an increase of 9.1% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a resilient increase from May 2022 to May 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +6.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, surgical appliance import price decreased by -7.0% against March 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 an increase of 69% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $46,816 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($199K per ton), while the price for Thailand ($4,786 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
