May 2023 Sees Sharp Increase in U.S. Synthetic Yarn Export to $46M

U.S. Synthetic Yarn Exports

In May 2023, the amount of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers exported from the United States skyrocketed to 15K tons, jumping by 29% against the previous month. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 36% m-o-m.

In value terms, synthetic yarn exports skyrocketed to $46M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 with an increase of 31% against the previous month.

Exports by Country

Honduras (12K tons) was the main destination for synthetic yarn exports from the United States, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, synthetic yarn exports to Honduras exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, El Salvador (1.5K tons), eightfold. Mexico (442 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3% share.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Honduras stood at -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: El Salvador (-5.0% per month) and Mexico (-1.2% per month).

In value terms, Honduras ($34M) remains the key foreign market for synthetic yarn exports from the United States, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by El Salvador ($5M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 5% share.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Honduras amounted to -2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: El Salvador (-5.3% per month) and Canada (-1.5% per month).

Exports by Type

Yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (14K tons) was the largest type of synthetic yarn exported from the United States, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (140 tons), with a 1% share of total exports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale amounted to -2.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (-2.0% per month) and yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (-2.8% per month).

In value terms, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($44M) remains the largest type of synthetic yarn exported from the United States, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale ($1.4M), with a 3.1% share of total exports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale stood at -3.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (-1.6% per month) and yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (-2.8% per month).

Export Prices by Country

In May 2023, the synthetic yarn price stood at $3,134 per ton (FOB, US), which is down by -5.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 6.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3,744 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to May 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($8,679 per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($2,918 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
