US Treasuries Rally Amid Technology Sector Sell-off

The 10-year US bond yield dropped sharply by 10 basis points to reach 4.52%, the lowest level seen since January 2, while traditional haven currencies like the yen, Swiss franc, and US dollar strengthened.

The catalyst for this market volatility was the unveiling of a new AI model by the Chinese startup DeepSeek, which heightened fears around the sustainability of lofty US tech valuations, triggering a global stock market decline. According to Pooja Kumra, senior rates strategist at Toronto-Dominion Bank, there has been a noticeable reconnection between the movements of equity and rates in light of these prevailing risk-off sentiments in the equity markets.

This shift towards safe assets occurs amid a week expected to be rife with market fluctuations, with attention focused on the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy announcement and ongoing tariff negotiations. The geopolitical arena was further stirred by a recent dispute between President Donald Trump and Colombia, where an agreement was quickly reached to return migrants to forestall the imposition of significant tariffs. "The incident again shows that tariffs are a negotiating tool, but markets need to price in some premium for the volatility that such announcements will bring," Mohit Kumar, chief economist and strategist for Europe at Jefferies International, commented.

Echoing the trajectory of US Treasuries, European bonds also witnessed gains, with the German 10-year yield declining by seven basis points to 2.50%, and similar upticks in debt securities from Italy, France, and the UK. The US dollar strengthened against all major Group-of-10 currencies except for the yen and Swiss franc, which saw increased haven demand. The Japanese yen appreciated by 0.8% to trade at 154.71 per dollar, marking its strongest position in five weeks, as traders showed a preference for long-volatility exposure options, seeking to navigate the turbulent market waters.
