US Treasuries Steady as Markets Anticipate Jobs Data

US Treasuries maintained a narrow trading range ahead of crucial jobs data expected to influence Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions. According to Bloomberg, the 10-year benchmark yield was stable at 4.43%, while the two-year yield edged higher to 4.23%. While economists suggest the jobs data will show a gradual cooling in the labor market, it is expected to remain robust, leading money markets to predict rate cuts starting in July.

Concerns about possible inflationary pressures have kept traders cautious, especially with potential tariffs by President Donald Trump looming. Canada and Mexico have received last-minute delays on these tariffs earlier this week. Market sentiment reflects skepticism about any significant rate cuts this year unless there's a substantial surprise in the payroll numbers. With a projected addition of 175,000 jobs last month following strong hurricane recovery-driven figures, the unemployment rate is likely to remain steady at 4.1%.

Max McKechnie, a global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, emphasized that recent strong inflation and labor market indicators have tempered the Fed's confidence in the cooling effects of higher borrowing costs. "It would take a big surprise in today's payrolls data to get US policymakers thinking seriously about cutting rates in March," he stated.

According to IndexBox data, the job market's robustness supports the Fed's ongoing pause on rate cuts, with swaps implying only a slim chance of easing next month. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has expressed no rush to reduce rates further after significant cuts late in 2024, aligning with the view that current economic data supports maintaining current policy stances.

ING's Padhraic Garvey noted that the jobs report is anticipated to offer a balanced outcome, reflecting macroeconomic stability, although not likely enough to drive Treasury yields lower. "The Fed would also look at this as the type of data that rationalizes an ongoing pause on any rate cutting ambitions implied by the dots for 2025," he added.
