US Weekly Jobless Claims See Marginal Increase

According to a Labor Department report released Thursday, initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 223,000 for the week ending January 18. This figure slightly exceeded economists' predictions, which had put new claims at 220,000.

While extreme weather conditions impacting large portions of the United States and recent fires in Los Angeles may influence upcoming claims, the labor market shows resilience. Data compiled by the IndexBox platform reveals that nonfarm payrolls increased by 256,000 jobs in December alone. Throughout the previous year, the economy added approximately 2.2 million positions, averaging about 186,000 jobs per month.

This continued strength in the labor market has contributed to the Federal Reserve's decision to reassess the number of anticipated interest rate cuts for the upcoming year. Initially planning for four reductions, the Fed has now scaled back this forecast to just two.

Tightened immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration, alongside proposed tax cuts and tariffs, have fueled further debate among U.S. central bank officials regarding future monetary policy measures. There are concerns that mass deportations and limited legal immigration may negatively impact labor market dynamics.

The Federal Reserve is not expected to announce any rate cuts in its upcoming policy meeting. Since September, the Fed has reduced its key overnight interest rate by 100 basis points, placing it within the range of 4.25% to 4.50%.

Next week's data on the number of individuals receiving benefits after their initial week of aid will potentially offer additional insights into the employment landscape for January. The so-called continuing claims increased by 46,000 to a seasonally adjusted 1.899 million in the week ending January 11, according to the claims report.
