U.S. Vegetable Import Price per Ton June 2022

In June 2022, the vegetable price per ton stood at $1,344 (CIF, US) in June 2022, rising by 17% against the previous month. Over the last five months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,986 per ton), while the price for Mexico amounted to $1,140 per ton.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+10.7%).

U.S. Vegetable Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was mushrooms and truffles ($4,531 per ton), while the price for watermelons ($492 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by spinach (+6.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Vegetable Imports

For the third consecutive month, the United States recorded decline in supplies from abroad of vegetables, which decreased by -29.1% to 639K tons in June 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 19% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 961K tons. From April 2022 to June 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable imports reduced dramatically to $858M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 16% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.2B. From April 2022 to June 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

U.S. Vegetable Imports by Type

In June 2022, tomatoes (174K tons) constituted the largest type of vegetable supplied to the United States, accounting for a 27% share of total imports. Moreover, tomatoes exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, cucumbers and gherkins (77K tons), twofold. Watermelons (62K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of tomatoes amounted to -1.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cucumbers and gherkins (-8.1% per month) and watermelons (-1.2% per month).

In value terms, the most traded types of vegetables in the United States were tomatoes ($246M), chilies and peppers (green) ($149M) and cucumbers and gherkins ($79M), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Asparagus, fresh vegetables, nes, dry onions, lettuce and chicory, cabbage and other brassicas, mushrooms and truffles, watermelons, potatoes, garlic, green beans, carrots and turnips, cauliflower and broccoli, melons, spinach, peas (green), eggplants (aubergine) and leeks and other alliaceous vegetables lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

U.S. Vegetable Imports by Country

In June 2022, Mexico (483K tons) constituted the largest vegetable supplier to the United States, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (120K tons), fourfold.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico totaled -4.9%.

In value terms, Mexico ($551M) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable to the United States, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($238M), with a 28% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mexico stood at -7.9%.
