Verizon and ForgiveCo Join Forces to Forgive $10M Debt for Hurricane-Impacted North Carolinians

Verizon, in collaboration with ForgiveCo, has embarked on a significant initiative to relieve over 6,500 residents of North Carolina from the crippling burden of $10 million in consumer debt, as they continue to recover from Hurricane Helene. The partnership is part of a broader campaign to aid communities affected by the September 2024 hurricane, aiming to provide substantial recovery support. ForgiveCo, renowned for its "random acts of kindness," acquired various debts including medical and financial obligations, notifying recipients through unexpected communications such as surprise letters, emails, and text messages.

According to IndexBox, the communications sector has been a pivotal player in driving local economies post-disaster, evident in campaigns like this which show how major corporations can contribute to community resilience.

At a news conference held at Verizon's South Asheville store, it was revealed that the cleared debts required no further action from the beneficiaries. This initiative was in addition to an initial $400,000 donation to the United Way of North Carolina made by Verizon following the storm.

"Unpayable debt is a heavy burden that causes hardship for countless hardworking Americans," commented Craig Antico, CEO of ForgiveCo. Highlighting the devastating impacts of natural disasters, he noted that their partnership with Verizon aims to transform the lives of affected North Carolinians and foster lasting change.
