Vietnam's Currency Hits Historic Low Against the Dollar

The Vietnamese dong has hit a record low against the US dollar as the central bank set a lower fixing rate, marking a challenging period for the Southeast Asian nation's economy. According to Bloomberg, the dong fell by 0.1% to 25,479 per dollar on Monday, surpassing its previous low set in May. This decline reflects broader pressures on emerging-market currencies following a strengthened dollar bolstered by a hawkish Federal Reserve.

The recent drop underscores the vulnerability of trade-reliant nations amid ongoing concerns over US tariffs. Notably, other emerging market currencies, such as the South Korean won, have also faced downward trends, with the won hitting its lowest levels since 2009 earlier this month.

The State Bank of Vietnam has reiterated its readiness to sell US dollars to stabilize the dong. The central bank set the reference rate for the dong at a record low of 24,327 per dollar, allowing the currency to trade within a 5% range on either side of this rate, according to data from IndexBox. This strategic move is aimed at navigating the volatile global currency landscape.
