Volatility in Canadian Stock Market Sparks Reassessment of Year-End Targets

The Canadian stock market experienced a day of extreme volatility, prompting financial strategists to reconsider their end-of-year targets for key indices. According to a report by Bloomberg, the volatility was significantly influenced by the announcement of tariffs from the US, which caught many analysts by surprise.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index initially plunged by 3.1% but managed to recover some of its losses, closing the day down by 1.1%. The initial drop was primarily driven by industrial stocks with cross-border supply chains. Despite a temporary reprieve with US tariffs on Canada being paused for 30 days, the long-term uncertainty remains a concern for investors.

Philip Petursson, chief investment strategist at IG Wealth Management, highlighted the unpredictability of market corrections, noting that temporary tariffs could still cause significant damage to annual earnings. Meanwhile, CIBC Capital Markets analyst Ian de Verteuil predicts a 5% correction in Canadian equities, while other analysts anticipate a more severe impact, with potential for up to a 20% decline in the index.

Data from the IndexBox platform suggests that the S&P/TSX Composite Index could still see a positive trajectory, potentially rising to 28,517 points by the year's end, representing a 13% gain from the recent close. However, due to the tariff situation, there's growing speculation that the Bank of Canada might opt for interest rate cuts, potentially reducing rates below 2% by year-end.

Despite the current volatility and market adjustments, some strategists, like Brian Belski of BMO Capital Markets, remain steadfast in their forecasts, maintaining a year-end target for the S&P/TSX Composite Index at 28,500 points. This optimism is shared by others on Bay Street who view the current volatility as a potential opportunity once the immediate volatility subsides.
