Walgreens has reported first-quarter fiscal results that surpassed Wall Street's expectations, with earnings signaling positive growth amidst multiple strategic moves including store closures and cost-cutting measures. According to CNBC, the company's efforts appear to be part of a larger plan to regain stability after a tumultuous year.
In the fiscal first quarter, Walgreens achieved sales of $39.46 billion, reflecting a 7.5% increase from the previous year. This growth was seen across all three of its business segments. A detailed report from IndexBox highlights that pharmacy sales for the quarter surged by 10.4%, influenced by rising brand medication prices and a total of 316.3 million prescriptions filled, including vaccines — a 1.5% increase from the prior year.
Conversely, the company recorded a net loss of $265 million, translating to a loss of 31 cents per share. This compares to a net loss of $67 million in the same period last year. Walgreens attributes the deepened losses chiefly to operational expenses associated with its strategy to close underperforming stores, aiming to shutter approximately 1,200 locations over the next three years.
The U.S. retail pharmacy division generated $30.87 billion in sales, exceeding analyst predictions of $29.21 billion. This division is integral to Walgreens' operations, encompassing the sales of both prescription and non-prescription medications, alongside various health and wellness products. Meanwhile, the company's U.S. healthcare unit reflected significant growth by reporting $2.17 billion in sales, surpassing the forecasted $2.09 billion.
The international business segment also saw a noteworthy rise, with sales at $6.43 billion, marking a 10.2% advance from the prior year, outperforming the anticipated $5.85 billion in revenues. Boots, Walgreens' U.K.-based chain, also contributed positively with a 4.5% sales increase, demonstrating resilience in foreign markets.
Despite these positive metrics, analyzed data from IndexBox indicates that Walgreens continues to face challenges. Retail sales experienced a drop of 6.2%, coinciding with weaker demand in discretionary product categories, coupled with a less severe cough, cold, and flu season.
CEO Tim Wentworth, in the company release, emphasized Walgreens' commitment to its 2025 objectives, focusing on cost optimization, cash flow improvements, and continued development of sustainable, retail pharmacy-led operations. The company's ongoing discussions about a potential sale to private equity firm Sycamore Partners further underline the strategic shifts at the core of its transformation drive.
