Walmart Canada Announces Largest Expansion Investment in Decades

Walmart Canada has unveiled plans for a significant C$6.5 billion ($4.51 billion) investment aimed at expanding its store network and enhancing its supply chain capabilities. This announcement, reported by Reuters, marks the company's largest financial commitment in Canada since it launched its first store nearly three decades ago.

The investment will enable the retail giant to open dozens of new venues, including five new supercenters in Ontario and Alberta by 2027. Beyond store expansions, Walmart Canada is set to modernize its distribution centers as part of its strategy to streamline operations and bolster both online and in-store offerings. "Across the country, we're making strategic investments in our online and in-store offerings to be more relevant to more customers than ever before," stated Joe Schrauder, chief operations officer at Walmart Canada.

Currently operating over 400 stores and employing more than 100,000 people in Canada, Walmart continues to solidify its footprint as part of a broader retail expansion trend. This development follows the brand's decision to open an additional 150 stores in the United States, as competitive pressures mount amid a rising preference for convenient services like free and curbside delivery.

In addition to the expansion plans, Walmart Canada announced the sale of its fleet business to Canada Cartage, although terms of the deal remain undisclosed. This move aligns with the company's broader strategy to refine operations, following a wage increase last year for its hourly retail and frontline associates.
