Walmart Faces Backlash Over DEI Policy Reversal

Walmart is once again under the spotlight as a group of over 30 shareholders representing $266 billion in assets demand a reversal of its decision to cut diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The move comes amid increasing debates over corporate America's role in social issues, with shareholders expressing their dissatisfaction in a letter to Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, according to a report from Yahoo Finance.

Last December, Walmart had announced the reduction of various DEI initiatives, including its participation in the Human Rights Campaign survey and its commitment to the Racial Equity Center. This sparked considerable backlash from advocacy groups and shareholders alike, who argue that the changes are "very disheartening."

The shareholders' letter highlights the importance of standing firm on DEI commitments, emphasizing that more than half of Walmart's workforce consists of people of color and could be adversely affected by such policy shifts. The letter further criticizes Walmart's stance as a capitulation to anti-DEI group pressures, ignoring calls to address racial equity risks.

This development arrives amid Walmart's competitive landscape where rivals like Costco are also engaged in similar debates. Costco recently urged shareholders to uphold its DEI programs, arguing they are "legally appropriate" and vital for business success, contrasting the pressures facing Walmart.
