WeBank's Strategic Move into Hong Kong's Web3 Infrastructure

Tencent Holdings-backed WeBank is making significant strides to bolster Hong Kong's Web3 infrastructure through its newly launched subsidiary, WeBank Technology Services. According to a report, the online lender is leveraging this opportunity to capitalize on the city's burgeoning virtual asset industry.

WeBank, China's preeminent online-only lending platform, is not only valued as the largest of its kind but also ranks as the world's 10th largest unicorn with a valuation of 235 billion yuan (US$32.4 billion) as reported by the Hurun Research Institute last year. The bank's Chief Information Officer, Henry Ma, expressed confidence in Hong Kong's potential to develop a robust and regulatory-friendly Web3 infrastructure.

Apart from focusing on digital banking, WeBank is also advancing its open-source blockchain platform, FISCO BCOS. This platform has already seen more than 500 use cases across various sectors such as finance, government services, and education in China. According to data from the IndexBox platform, the digital banking sector is expected to witness a projected annual growth rate, further supporting WeBank's strategic move into the Web3 domain in Hong Kong.

As the city aims to solidify its position as a virtual asset hub, WeBank's initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening industry infrastructure, potentially inviting more firms to explore similar developments in Hong Kong's dynamic Web3 landscape.
