Why India's Wheat Prices are Rising

As India experiences extremely high temperatures, it is now more difficult for crop yields to survive and often risks experiencing a shortage of wheat, FoodTank says. The Indian government recently put a ban on exports of wheat as a response to anticipated global demand as they strictly monitor worldwide trends.

The peak of India's hottest March on record coincided with continued and even higher temperatures in April and May, near 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

The record temperatures resulted in stunted growth of wheat crops, which will affect the projected yield. The crop has not been impacted by other crops and fortunately, farmers who have unsatisfactory access to irrigation did not suffer from the heatwave as much.

India has been steadily increasing wheat production, and has become the world's second-largest producer of wheat in recent years, according to IndexBox data. This is due to India's growth as a producer of wheat over the past three years.

The global shortage of wheat has resulted in more expensive grain prices. The situation for wheat is so dire that even though India stood as a promising contender to help with the problem and had previously been destined to produce enough supply to export, trucking routes are currently disrupted and trade sanctions have suspended export in order to help sustain domestic supply.

As the temperature lowered, a country made a decision to ban wheat exports.

A new report finds that the rise in global prices for wheat did not benefit most of the growers because they lack land to cultivate. India's buffer stocks will negate the major effect that crop losses and the rise in wheat prices have on India's rural poor.

Food price inflation may affect migrant laborers who usually don't have access to food programs such as those offered by the World Food Program.

The World Weather Attribution found that heat waves are more likely to worsen, and this heatwave was made as such by human-caused climate change. It is predicted that high temperature events will become more common and hotter.

Farmers will need to adapt in order to better prepare for the effects of climate change. Conservation experts convened on ways to achieve this, including reducing tillage and planting more resistant crops.

The Tata-Cornell Institute is working with smallholder farmers in the state of Bihar to increase crop production and mitigate emissions through changes to agricultural systems. They hope that making Bihar a model for other Indian states will be the start of a change around the world.

Higher-quality plant species can lower emissions, improve nutrition outcomes, and provide a greater degree of resilience to environmental change.
