Woodside Energy Group Partners with Bechtel for Louisiana LNG Project

Australia's Woodside Energy Group has inked a significant engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with the U.S. engineering firm Bechtel for the development of the Louisiana liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The project includes the foundation development of three production trains with a potential output of 16.5 million tons per annum, with the final investment decision expected by the first quarter of 2025.

Woodside plans to spend up to $1.3 billion from December to Q1 2025 on the Louisiana project. The estimated cost for this foundation development remains constant at $900-$960 per ton of LNG. In October, Woodside acquired the Louisiana project for $1.2 billion from Tellurian Inc and is now exploring the sale of a 50% stake in the initiative, which boasts a total permitted capacity of 27.6 million tons per year.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, in 2023, the United States exported liquefied natural gas valued at $33.4 billion. Key export partners included the Netherlands ($4.4 billion), France ($3.8 billion), and the United Kingdom ($3.5 billion). Import figures, however, were significantly lower, totaling $963.1 million, with Trinidad and Tobago and Nigeria emerging as major suppliers, contributing $513.7 million and $449.3 million, respectively.
