Yen Strengthens as Bank of Japan Holds Firm on Rate Hikes

The Japanese yen appreciated on Thursday following comments from Bank of Japan (BOJ) Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino, which strengthened market sentiment that the central bank will persist with its rate hikes this year. According to a report by Bloomberg, the yen rose by 0.4% to trade at 154.59 per dollar, climbing as high as 154.29 earlier in the session.

The yen's rise was further supported by an increase in Japanese Government Bond (JGB) yields, driven by expectations of a potentially hawkish policy from the Bank of Japan. Himino's reaffirmation to align with Governor Kazuo Ueda in asserting that the BOJ would raise rates if their economic outlook materializes added to the confidence. He noted that the persistently negative real rates were "not normal," advocating for a gradual transition towards positive yields.

Senior currency analyst Juntaro Morimoto of Sony Financial Group highlighted the challenge in forecasting the BOJ's next move, given that any further rate hike is not anticipated until mid-2025 at the earliest. While the BOJ's recent rate increase has not yet significantly narrowed the interest rate gap between the US and Japan, swaps traders remain optimistic. They currently price in a 66% likelihood of a BOJ rate hike by July, with full confidence in an adjustment by October.

In Tokyo, MUFG Bank Ltd.'s head of global markets research, Teppei Ino, suggested that some parts of Himino's speech hinted possible considerations for a terminal rate above 1%, which may present an "upside risk to the yen."
