Yum China Expands Store Network Amid Economic Challenges

Yum China Holdings, the operator of KFC and Pizza Hut in mainland China, has announced plans to open up to 1,800 new stores in 2025, continuing an expansion strategy aimed at lower-tier cities. According to IndexBox, the growing demand in these markets is seen as a key driver for Yum China's growth. Despite a slow economic backdrop and challenges such as China's lingering deflation and potential trade conflicts, Yum China views these markets as ripe for expansion. CEO Joey Wat highlighted that smaller Chinese cities would be targeted using strategies involving 'lower investment, smaller menus, and a simpler operating model.'

The company plans to allocate up to half of its US$700 million to US$800 million capital expenditure on new store openings this year, reflecting its focus on penetrating new markets. Deutsche Bank analyst Han Zhang noted that while Yum remains committed to providing value for money through various promotions, it remains cautious about predicting same-store sales growth in 2025 due to existing macroeconomic uncertainties.

In 2024, Yum opened 534 new stores in the fourth quarter alone, bringing the total count close to its 2025 target range of 1,600 to 1,800 new outlets. This continued expansion underscores Yum China's resilient approach to navigating a complex economic landscape, leveraging market potential in both top-tier and emerging lower-tier cities.
