Zijin Mining Group's Record Profits and Strategic Adjustments in 2024

Zijin Mining Group has reported an impressive surge in its annual profits, positioning itself alongside the likes of global commodity trading giant Glencore. According to a report by SCMP, the Chinese gold and copper producer's net income rose by 52% to 32 billion yuan (US$4.4 billion) for the year 2024, as detailed in its recent Hong Kong stock exchange filing.

The substantial profit growth has boosted Zijin's market capitalisation to levels comparable with Glencore, backed by an uptick in copper output and soaring gold prices. However, the company has adjusted its growth targets for the year, reducing its copper production forecast by approximately 6% to 1.15 million tons. Simultaneously, Zijin has scaled back its lithium production goals for 2025 by around 60% to 40,000 tons due to market constraints.

Shares of Zijin Mining saw a slight dip of 1.3% to HK$14.80 in mid-afternoon trading, reflecting broader market trends as the Hang Seng Index fell by 1.8%. The strategic expansion into lithium, a sector analogous to that pursued by its competitor Rio Tinto Group, has met challenges. Notably, delays in planned projects in Argentina and Western China due to a significant drop in lithium prices have impacted global production strategies.
